A technical indicator is a tool that displays useful information on your trading chart and it is usually based on mathematical calculations. There many well known indicators used in trading ranging from simple moving averages, indicators named by their inventors, like the Bollinger bands. Also many times, traders invent their own indicators, depending on what they need to visualize on their chart. cTrader Fondex comes equipped with a constantly growing collection of 70+ built in indicators as well as the option to create your own indicator using cTrader Automate. In this article we will explain how to add indicators on Fondex cTrader.

Adding an Indicator

There are two ways of adding indicators on a Fondex cTrader chart. These are a) from the Chart Toolbar b) from the Chart Menu

Adding an Indicator from the Chart Toolbar

To add an indicator to Fondex cTrader from the Chart Toolbar, hover over the Indicators button, then hover over the group of Indicators from the drop-down and click on the desired Indicator.

The Indicator menu will pop up. Here you can customize the indicator line color, thickness, and set the Indicator Time Frame. When done, click OK to apply changes and add the indicator to the chart.

Adding an Indicator from the Chart Toolbar

 You also have the option to add an indicator to Fondex cTrader from inside the chart. To do so, right-click directly on the chart to get the chart menu. See below.

Note that some of the Indicators appear directly in the chart and the others below it, in the separate chart area.

In a similar way, choose your indicator and add it to the chart. Note that some indicators, like moving averages,  are displayed directly on the chart while others, like Relative Strength Index, are displayed in a separate indicator chart. See the two examples below

Modifying and Removing Indicators

After you have placed your indicator on the chart, you have the option to modify it or delete it.

To modify an indicator, hover over the Objects icon and select Indicators. Click on the desired Indicator in the list.

The selected indicator will be highlighted on the chart. To modify the Indicator, click on the Settings button and the Indicator window will appear. 

Modify your indicator and click Ok to save changes.

To delete the indicator, just click on the trash bin, inside the Object Manager.

Adding a Custom Indicator on Fondex cTrader

Besides the built-in indicators, Fondex cTrader allows you to create your own indicator. To create a custom indicator on Fondex cTrader, you need to follow the steps highlighted below

1. Go to "Automate" section on your cTrader desktop:

2. Click on "Indicators" tab:

3. Click on "New" button, cTrader Automate will create a new custom indicator with some default code on it:

A new indicator will be added to the Indicators list

By clicking on the indicator, you will see on the right side the code editor where you can write the code for the your indicator

To write a custom indicator, you need to be familiar with C# programming language. We will provide more information on how to write custom indicators in subsequent articles.
