Alibaba Fires Manager Responsible for Sexual Assault Case
Chinese e-commerce giant - Alibaba has fired a manager of Alibaba’s City Retail, who allegedly sexually assaulted a female employee.
Over the weekend, a female member of staff posted an account on Alibaba's intranet in which she said her supervisor and a client sexually assaulted her while on a business trip. What makes the matters of the case worse, is that the victim was intoxicated as the assault took place - superiors ordered her to drink alcohol with coworkers during dinner. The police are investigating the case further.
"Alibaba Group has a zero-tolerance policy against sexual misconduct, and ensuring a safe workplace for all our employees is Alibaba's top priority”, a company spokesperson told Reuters. Additionally, a memo published by the company assured that not only has the man in question been fired, he will also never be rehired again.
Threads related to the incident subsequently ranked among the top-trending on Weibo, which has already been squirming with a discussion of the #MeToo anti-sexual harassment movement following a celebrity scandal last week.
"This incident is a humiliation for all Alibaba employees. We must rebuild, and we must change," Zhang said in a memo.
