Nissan not Partnering with Apple for Autonomous Car Project

Nissan’s shares took a 3.7% slip this morning following news that the company is not in talks with Apple, which shattered the report that Apple approached the Japanese company in recent months about an autonomous car project.

Reuters reported in December that Apple was moving forward with autonomous car technology and looked to produce a vehicle that could include its own breakthrough battery technology as early as 2024, causing speculation as to who the big tech giant’s partner could be.

The Financial Times reported that Apple and Nissan had brief discussions that failed over Nissan's reluctance to become an assembler for Apple-branded cars. Early stage talks between Apple and Hyundai over autonomous electric cars have also fallen through recently on concerns of the South Korean automaker about becoming just a contract manufacturer.
