Thinking of trading IBM?

    1. IBM stock rallied more than 20% this year, as a better-than-expected fourth-quarter report in January and optimism about its acquisition of Red Hat (NYSE:RHT) brought back value-seeking investors. IBM still looks cheap at 10 times forward earnings and it pays a high forward dividend yield of 4.6%. 2. Moreover, the integration of Red Hat's open source Linux OS, JBoss enterprise middleware, and cloud-based virtualization services could significantly strengthen IBM's business software and cloud ecosystems.

IBM is an American multinational information technology, founded longer than 100 years ago in 1911. The company was founded in Endicott, New York, as the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company (CTR) and was renamed "International Business Machines" in 1924. IBM produces and sells computer hardware, middleware and software, and provides hosting and consulting services in areas ranging from mainframe computers to nanotechnology. IBM holds the record for most U.S. patents for 26 consecutive years. Some of the major patented inventions of IBM is the ATM, the floppy disk and the hard drive. The success of IBM is partially because of its patents and also due to successful acquisitions such as PwC Consulting (2002), SPSS (2009), The Weather Company (2016), and Red Hat.Nicknamed Big Blue, IBM is one of 30 companies included in the Dow Jones Industrial Average and one of the world's largest employers, with (as of 2017) over 380,000 employees, it is also a component of S&P 100 and S&P 500. IBM employees have been awarded five Nobel Prizes, six Turing Awards, ten National Medals of Technology (USA) and five National Medals of Science (USA).

1. IBM is struggling to compete against AWS and Azure in the cloud services space. IBM's cloud services revenue rose 18% annually last quarter, but that rate pales in comparison to the growth rates of AWS and Azure. 2. Demand for its IBM Z mainframe systems is currently at a cyclical low. Also, the strong dollar is throttling IBM's growth. On a constant currency basis, its revenue dipped just 1% during the fourth quarter.
